Freshly recommissioned, this 1966 SAAB 96 coupe looks and sounds great.
Having been off the road for a number of years as a non-runner, the 841cc 2-stroke engine has just been recommissioned and, amongst others, has benefitted from a carburettor rebuild, fuel pump rebuild and new fuel tank. Now starts on the button and runs with a glorious rasp...no volume controls, it's just loud! Hydraulics have been overhauled giving a good brake smooth shifting through the column controlled transmission.
We have tended to the obvious areas of corrosion - around the windscreen / scuttle, sills, front floors etc. - which have all now been cut and properly welded. It's now a very solid car although the next owner may wish to further improve the bodywork by re-gapping the doors and re-sealing the underside. The tired-looking old red paint has been ditched and we have reverted back to the original Verona Green colour with a lovely new windows-out respray. Further originality has been restored with the addition of the proper hub caps for this model.
On the inside, we have dismissed the old aftermarket seats and sourced original 96 seats which have been beautifully retrimmed in two-tone charcoal. New door cards and parcel shelf in matching colours have been fitted and are set-off nicely with brand new carpets. The dashboard has been donated from a 96 Sport! As such some of the gauges aren't original to our car but, nevertheless, they don't look at all out of place in the fresh, period cabin.
These 2-strokes are getting increasingly hard to find - certainly in this condition - and we believe this sympathetic restoration to be a real head-turner with scope for further improvement as, when and if the new owner should choose. The car comes with some papers and V5 and will be sold with a new MOT so as to be ready to driven away and be enjoyed!
